There have been a couple of times in my life when I was really embarrased. More than a couple, really. Most of them were during a time when I was honing my skills at jackassery but was neglecting the ability to not care what people thought of me (something I'm better at now, but by no means proficient).
Anyway, back in the day, there was a time I was talking to a friend of mine, and I was extolling the virtues of the band Joy Division. I seem to recall something like "Such a formative group, helped shape the face of industrial music." To which she responded something like "Oh, yeah? Name two Joy Division songs that weren't covered by Nine Inch Nails on The Crow soundtrack."
Which, obviously, I couldn't, because I was a weenie who was talking out of his ass. However, I'd like it to go on record that since then, I have listened to Joy Division quite a bit. And though I didn't necessarily know it at the time, I was correct in my assessment that they not only rock (in a alienated and paranoid kind of way), their sound did in fact help to influence an entire genre of music.
And again, just for the record:
- Disorder
- Transmission
