Name: Willebrand Snell (1580-1626)
Writes: Right
Dominant Cortex: Left
University: University of Leiden
Key Contributions: In 1617 Snell published Eratosthenes Batavus, which contains his methods for measuring the Earth. He proposed the method of triangulation and this work is the foundation of geodesy.
Snell's law gives the relationship between angles of incidence and refraction for a wave impinging on a dielectric. The law follows from the boundary condition that a wave be continuous across a boundary, which requires that the phase of the wave be constant on any given plane, resulting in n1*sin(theta1)=n2*sin(theta2) where theta1 and theta2 are the angles from the normal of the incident and refracted waves, respectively. Snell's law may describe reflection by letting n1=n2.
