Help Me Name My...

"Maybe a drink is a bad idea, then.": 10-4-2004

I was out at a party the other night. It was a lot of fun, and we and my crew closed the place out (I was actually really proud of us. Partying until 4AM, and the hostess wasn't even kicking us out. Of course, she's an old friend of mine, and may have just been too polite. In fact, at one point she told a story about this strange guy who was staying late after a party while she was waiting with a friend of hers to head to bed, and how annoying he was. I wonder if that was a hint).

Everyone I talked to (and I mean everyone) was asking me - who is that really weird guy over there? The funny thing was, they weren't talking about the guy in the gorilla suit. They were talking about Rafi, a friend of ours. Bar none, the weirdest person I've ever met. Prone to strange outbursts, was doing handstands for no particular reason, stealing peoples cups and throwing them off the roof (by the way - sorry about that, Kara). He's a doctor. I don't know if that makes me nervous or not. On one hand, I want my doctor to not be the guy at the party everyone meets and says "what?" On the other hand, all of my friends are that guy, so why should my doctor not qualify to be my friend?

Last night, I was at the RJD2 show at Northsix in Brooklyn. It was a seriously good time (Diplo was one of the opening acts, whom I'd never heard before. I'll tell you, you haven't heard music until you've heard a white guy loop the opening guitar riffs to Weezer's Undone and drop a hip hop beat on them. Also, I never knew quite how funky the opening to The Cure's Lovecats could be. He was incredible, and you should all go buy his albums and mixtapes), even though I was alone (the fellow I was going with got shut out of the show, as it was sold out long before he got there. Disappointing, but what are you gonna do?). Also, I saw a RJ go from mixing on 4 turntables and a sample, to an encore which was him, a mic, and his acoustic guitar. It was possibly the weirdest thing I saw that entire day. I was making eyes at some girl throughout the entire of RJ's set, which made me feel pretty good about myself. At the end, I asked if she wanted to head out for a drink. "Ummmmm... Yeah, I don't know. Errrr.... I kind of don't have ID."

I really have to stop going to all ages shows.

The night before that was a They Might Be Giants show at Irving Plaza. Which, as TMBG shows are wont to be, was amazing. I've been to a bunch of their shows across the years (I'm reminded of a time back in the day when they were playing every Thursday night for a few months at Tramps, when that venue was still around. A couple of friends (including Target Girl Allison) and I would go to all these shows, and hand out candy before hand. It was weird to be hanging out with Dave in the city on unrelated occasions, and have people point at him and cry "Hi, Candyman!"). TMBG fans are great music fans, since they are some of the only NYC music fans who will still dance at shows. Also, when you look around at a TMBG show, everyone is smiling, all the time. You just don't get that at Elefant, or Death Cab, or just about any other band (except, I hear, The Polyphonic Spree. But they are more of a cult than a band). And there was some serious pogo'ing, which you don't see very often either. Nothing funny about this show. I mean there were some funny things, but I don't think I'm going to share them. I have to keep some things back for my memoirs, you realize.
